With so much turmoil, tragedy, and suffering going on in the world today, many of us are feeling tired, frustrated, emotionally drained, and stressed. When you add the daily stresses of entrepreneurship, the political climate, managing your family and personal life, many of us are feeling a sense of dread, overwhelm and anxiety.
We often hear about the importance of good physical health, but our mental health is equally as important. Our mental health determines how we think, feel and act. In other words, our mental health determines how we show up in the world. There are many things that you can do to take care of your mental health. However, I have found four ways to maintain good mental health and well-being which are fairly easy to incorporate into your life.
(1) Value Yourself – It is so easy to always put the needs of family, friends, and clients before your own needs. However, it is most important to care for yourself so that you can be of service to others. I know it can be challenging to find time for you in a busy day. However, in has been proven that even taking thirty minutes for yourself will improve your mental health. Can’t decide what to do in thirty minutes? Read a few chapters in a book. Relax by listening to some music. Take a bath by candlelight. Find a hobby that brings you joy. Go for a walk in the park or even just sit in the park and enjoy nature.
(2) Take Care of Your Body – Eat healthy, nutritious meals. Drink more water and less sugary drinks. And exercise. Can’t get a full workout in? How about taking a walk during your lunch break? According to physicians, thirty minutes of exercise taken 3-4 times a week will make a difference in your physical and mental health.
(3) Surround Yourself with Positive People — Life is so much better when you are surrounded by people who support you, understand you, and allow you to be your authentic self without judgment.
(4) Quiet Your Mind – Studies have proven there are many benefits to gain by mediating and/or praying. Among many other things, meditation reduces stress, improves focus, and improves overall health. Prayer usually brings peace and comfort. However, many people prefer other ways to quiet their minds such as walking in nature, listening to soothing music, coloring, or just being still without distractions. Even if you only take ten minutes a day to quiet your mind, you will see an improvement in your overall well being.
